I mean this doesn’t seem to be a renewed rivalry. Rivalry’s need a bit of animosity and quite honestly both these teams are filled with Boy Scouts. Nothing wrong with that. These teams just don’t scream anything in the same breathe as the rivalry used to be.
And not to be picky but I would even argue that the Red Sox haven’t really owned the Yankees in the regular season lately, either. From 2021 to this 2025 season, so 5 seasons, the Sox have won the season series twice. And outside of a lopsided 2023 season where the Sox oddly went 11-2 against them, they’re pretty similarly matched.
I sincerely hope the Sox win and advance. I think the Yankees are fairly overrated. I just don’t think it’s what it once was. It’s like dumping a little shooter of vodka in a gallon of orange juice and calling it a screw driver. Yeah, technically. But no one’s gonna get fucked up by it.
Fair. But, it’s renewed in the sense that this season in particular (because both teams were competing for postseason) as well as now playoffs, made the games between them feel more meaningful other than just bragging rights. I don’t know if we will ever get back to 2003-2004 Sox/Yanks. To be fair, even 2018 didn’t feel that way. 2021 felt a little more animosity due to the way we finished against the Yankees that season and the Stanton grand slam bat flip, etc. However, I believe this is a step in the right direction. Relevancy and now a playoff meeting may go a ways to aiding this all. But, if we are judging a rivalry as strictly 2003-2004 vibes, then we may never see it again. I wrote an article about September meetings has swayed the dominance of the Red Sox towards the Yankees favor quite substantially since 2020. Nonetheless, I picked the Yankees in 2 on our podcast, because I just don’t think we are equipped to withstand the Yankees firepower and they are the hottest team in the MLB at the right time. But, I would be ecstatic if the Sox can pull off a series win here! Thanks for the comments!
