Red Sox Ride 9-Game Heater Into Wild Card Driver's Seat — And They’re Not Done Yet
By: Chris Felico
After a climactic and heroic victory in the bottom of the 9th inning — a Cedanne Rafaela 2-run homer that secured their 8th straight win and vaulted them into the second AL Wild Card spot — the Boston Red Sox have officially caught fire. With their 9th consecutive win — a gritty, playoff-style victory highlighted by Crochet's dominant (first) complete game shutout — they now sit just one win away from completing a third straight series sweep. The first two? Against the lowly Washington Nationals and the historically dreadful Colorado Rockies. The latest? A potential sweep over a Rays team many had pegged for October just a few weeks ago.
The early wins during this streak raised eyebrows, mostly because of the football-like scores Boston was piling up. The Sox offense exploded for double digits seemingly every night, outslugging weak opponents with ease. Critics were quick to call it unsustainable — the product of a soft part of the schedule. But what they’re doing now? It’s different. The Red Sox are grinding out tight, high-leverage wins against one of the most pitching-savvy teams in the league. They’re not just beating up on bottom-feeders — they’re starting to resemble the kind of team that makes noise in October. And the way they’re doing it feels familiar: much like the gritty sweep of the Yankees on Father’s Day last month, just hours before shipping out Rafael Devers in a franchise-shaking trade.
Now, the question isn’t whether this run is real — it’s how far it can take them. The Red Sox have surged into the second AL Wild Card spot, just 2 games behind the Yankees for the top seed in the Wild Card, and only 4.5 games out of first place in the AL East behind the Toronto Blue Jays. What once looked like a middling season full of question marks has quickly transformed into one with serious postseason potential. And if the pitching holds, and the bats stay hot — or even just timely — the Red Sox might not just be a Wild Card team. They might be a real problem. Only time and a trade deadline will tell us for certain. Either way, enjoy the ride!
