The Boston Red Sox won the rubber match on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Fenway to take the series 2-1 against the LA Dodgers. A huge 2-run Breggy bomb in the 5th proved to be the winning runs in the final game to clinch the series. After losing both series coming out of the break Red Sox fans came back down to reality doubting the team’s potential, but coming back home to take two out of three against the defending champs shows Red Sox nation this team is still worth believing in.
Game 1: Dodgers Win 5-2
Bryan Bello 5.1 IP 6H 3ER 5K 2BB
Despite getting the only loss in the series Bello had good stuff Friday night. Bello did a great job of getting big strikeouts or a big fly out when he needed to get out of trouble. Going 5+ and only giving up 3 runs to this roster is all you can ask for. I guess what else you could ask for is a little run support but after 2 runs in the 3rd inning from Duran and Bregman rbi’s, to make the game 3-2 Dodgers, that was all the Red Sox could scrap over home plate. Then add a late center field 2-run home run from Teoscar Hernandez in the 8th inning pushed the game out of reach for their last six outs.
Game 2: Red Sox Win 4-2
Garret Crochet: 6.0 IP 8H 2ER 10K 2BB
Red Sox nation should have all the faith in the world going into a Crochet day. Being in the mix of the top 3 pitchers in the MLB any day Garret Crochet takes the hill he gives his team a great chance to win. Then the game started and Shohei Ohtani, the leagues greatest player, started the game hitting his 38th home run on the season and his 12th lead-off home run. Then two batters later Teoscar Hernandez stepped in and hit an absolute moon shot over the monster that still might not have landed yet. It was a shaky start for the ace but knowing Crochet having a 2.12 ERA that he would settle down. Settle down he did, striking out 10 batters over six innings without letting another run come across for LA. Off the back of Jaren Duran hitting not one but two triples in the game, the first knocking in two runs and the second leading to a Toro sac fly driving him in gave the Red Sox a 3-2 lead in the 3rd inning. Rookie sensation Roman Anthony reached base 4 times in the game and scoring the 4th and final run for the Sox after doubling off the wall leading to Alex Bregman knocking him in. Chapman took the mound in the 9th and ended the game freezing Mookie Betts on a strike out looking.
Game 3: Red Sox Win 4-3
Walker Buehler: 4.2 IP 4H 3ER 4K 5BB
Walker Buehler was coming off three really quality starts going deep into games and keeping runs off the board. Sunday afternoon after a bit of a late start due to a rain delay Buehler feel back into his ways with no command of his pitches. He walked 5 batters in fewer than 5 innings including walking in a run in the 3rd. After a rbi single from Mookie Betts gave the Dodgers a 3-1 lead and the way Walker was pitching the feeling was the Red Sox are going to need to really rely on the lineup to win the game for them. With a lot of help from the bullpen it was the perfect combo for a comeback win for the Sox. It was more of the same from the lineup with Anthony and Bregman leading the team to victory yet again. Roman scoring the first run for the team in the first inning and then knocking Toro in all the way from first with a triple off the green monster in the 5th brought the Sox within one run. Then the next batter as he has done so many times this season Alex Bregman stepped into the box and hit a tank over the monster to take a 4-3 lead over the Dodgers. Calling on five different pitchers out of the pen they were nails not giving up any runs after taking over from Walker in the 5th. Although we got little injury scares from Roman Anthony and Aroldis Chapman. Cora seems optimistic that no one will need to miss any time and even though it looked scary with Chapman throwing 5 mph lower than his average Cora said after the game it was only back stiffness, and he pulled him just to be safe.
Looking Ahead
The Boston Red Sox start a three-game series Monday night against the Minnesota Twins. As the Red Sox close in on the Yankees and Mariners for the top wild card spot a series against the Twins is a huge spot to take another 2 out of 3 series win at the very least. While the Yankees start a series with the Rays and the Mariners with the Sacramento A’s the Red Sox cannot afford anything less than two wins against the Twins. Although the Red Sox are avoiding a start from Joe Ryan in the series so with that in play, I predict the Red Sox to go on another win streak sweeping the Twins to get to 5 straight wins and end the series on top of the wild car standings.
