The Red Sox spent the summer convincing everyone that their season had been resurrected. After falling to 32-46, Boston ripped off an absurd 32-5 stretch from June 25 through August 7, including a franchise-tying 15-game winning streak. It was one of the most remarkable turnarounds the organization had seen in years. For a moment, it felt as if the season had been transformed from a disaster into something special. But baseball, particularly October baseball, has a brutal way of putting everything into perspective. The Red Sox didn’t win the division. They didn’t win a playoff series. They didn’t even win a postseason game. Instead, they were swept by the Yankees, 18-2 over two games, ending their season exactly where it ended a year ago: at the hands of their archrival.

And that is the uncomfortable truth about the summer: it didn’t matter when it mattered most. The 32-5 run was extraordinary, but it ultimately bought Boston two more games against the Yankees and nothing more. The Red Sox had spent months digging themselves out of a hole, only to arrive in October and look completely overwhelmed. Last year's postseason loss to New York went three games; this year's lasted two. Garrett Crochet, who was instrumental in last year's playoff victory over the Yankees, couldn't even make his 2026 postseason debut until Game 2 after spending nearly the entire season on the injured list. And, when he got his opportunity as a reliever in a 2-1 game, it was evident that he hadn’t pitched in over five months. The summer was fun. It was dramatic. It was memorable. But the objective of a baseball season isn't to create the best story in July. It is to still be standing when October ends.

Worse, there is an argument that the spectacular comeback actually made the larger failure more consequential. Had Boston remained buried at 32-46, the organization would have been forced to confront its flaws much earlier. Instead, the winning streak transformed a lost season into a referendum on the roster, the front office and the direction of the franchise. Suddenly, the Red Sox were buyers, contenders and believers. Craig Breslow pushed chips into the middle at the trade deadline, acquiring Adley Rutschman and other pieces while spending significant prospect capital. The organization was rewarded with a playoff berth—but the prize was another early exit to the Yankees. The comeback therefore didn't simply fail to produce a championship; it may have delayed the reckoning that was necessary to determine whether this roster was actually constructed to win in October.

That brings us to the philosophy behind the operation. Boston has increasingly leaned into an analytical, efficiency-driven approach, trying to find value and build intelligently rather than simply overwhelming the competition with pure payroll and proven talent. There is nothing inherently wrong with analytics—every serious organization uses them—but Moneyball has never really been about proving that cleverness is more important than talent. In a big market, the expectation isn't merely to find inefficiencies. It is to turn those advantages into championships. And after two consecutive postseason eliminations by New York, the question becomes unavoidable: what exactly has this approach produced? The Red Sox have now spent two years building toward October only to have the Yankees erase them before the Division Series. Even worse, Chicago's historically ugly recent stretch has now produced a playoff series victory sooner than Boston's post-Crochet era, an absurd comparison that nevertheless captures the frustration surrounding where the Red Sox currently stand.

The American League was there for the taking, too. Boston didn't have to navigate some unbeatable juggernaut standing in its way. The league was remarkably open, and the Red Sox demonstrated during that 32-5 stretch that they were capable of playing dominant baseball. That's what makes the ending so difficult to accept. They showed us what this team could look like at its absolute best—and then showed us that its best wasn't nearly enough. The Yankees, meanwhile, remain the measuring stick Boston cannot escape. New York took seven of the 13 regular-season meetings and then eliminated Boston in consecutive postseasons. Whatever happened during those magical weeks of summer, the only rivalry result that will survive in the record books is the one that sent the Red Sox home.

There is a line in Moneyball that feels almost painfully appropriate here: “If we don't win the last game of the Series, they'll dismiss us.” That's the cruel bargain of professional sports. Nobody can take away what those players accomplished between June and August. Nobody can erase the feeling of watching a 32-5 team emerge from what looked like an impossible hole. But history doesn't preserve regular-season winning streaks the way fans remember them in the moment. It preserves champions, pennant winners and postseason moments. The 2026 Red Sox created a generational summer, but they didn't create a championship. And after losing to the Yankees for the second straight year, the question isn't whether that summer was real—it absolutely was. The question is whether it ultimately meant anything. In the annals of baseball history, the answer may be painfully simple: not nearly enough.

Theo Epstein once said that every season is sacred, and he's right. The Red Sox need to find a way to make 2025 productive. They could continue to bang out games running the same flawed lineup out there every night in the hopes that they can turn the season around or they could choose to accept a new mission. The mission is to maximize the chances of opening a championship window in 2026. Now, I can just hear the Ballpark Buzzes and Boston Sports Gordos of the world rise up in anger. "This team is not that far away! They can still win the World Series!" OK, you have fun with that. To be clear, I'm not saying you concede the 2025 season. They should still try to win every game. Anything less would send the wrong message to the team. My suggestion is to make changes now that will set you up for success in 2026.

All the media outlets love to report how bad the Red Sox are with runners in scoring position (the infamous RISP). I was curious what this actually looks like, so I broke down the RISP chances in the 10-8 loss to the Rays in timeline form:

Bottom 2: Man on 2nd - Mayer walks - 0 for 0

Bottom 2: 1st & 2nd - Rafaela walks - 0 for 0

Bottom 2: Bases loaded - Wong grounds out - 0 for 1

Bottom 5: Man on 2nd - Rafaela singles - 1 for 2

Bottom 5: 1st & 3rd - Wong GIDP, run scores - 1 for 3

Bottom 6: 1st & 2nd - Story strikes out - 1 for 4

Bottom 6: 1st & 2nd - Anthony strikes out - 1 for 5

Bottom 6: 1st & 2nd - Campbell HBP - 1 for 5

Bottom 6: Bases loaded - Gonzalez doubles, 2 runs score - 2 for 6

Bottom 6: 2nd & 3rd - Rafaela strikes out - 2 for 7

Bottom 7: 2nd & 3rd - Devers strikes out - 2 for 8

Bottom 7: 2nd & 3rd - Toro grounds out, run scores - 2 for 9

Bottom 7: Man on 3rd - Story singles, run scores - 3 for 10

Bottom 7: Man on 2nd - Anthony walks - 3 for 10

Bottom 7: 1st & 2nd - Campbell strikes out - 3 for 11

Bottom 8: Man on 2nd - Duran strikes out - 3 for 12

Bottom 9: 2nd & 3rd - Story flies out - 3 for 13

Bottom 9: 2nd & 3rd - Anthony grounds out, run scores - 3 for 14

Bottom 9: Man on 3rd - Campbell singles, run scores - 4 for 15

Bottom 9: 2nd & 3rd - Rafaela pops out - 4 for 16

Bottom 10: Man on 2nd - Narvaez strikes out - 4 for 17

Bottom 10: Man on 2nd - Duran flies out - 4 for 18

Bottom 10: 1st & 2nd - Toro reaches on fielding error, run scores - 4 for 19

Bottom 10: 1st & 3rd - Story flies out - 4 for 20

Bottom 11: Man on 2nd - Refsnyder walks - 4 for 20

Bottom 11: 1st & 2nd - Campbell lines out - 4 for 21

Bottom 11: 1st & 2nd - Gonzalez strikes out - 4 for 22

Bottom 11: 1st & 2nd - Rafaela lines out - 4 for 23

For those keeping score, even though they did go 4 for 23 (.174), they walked 4 times and scored 4 runs without recording a hit (GIDP, 2 ground outs, and a fielding error). So, technically they were 8 for 23 (.348) in scoring runs with RISP. Should that make everyone feel better? No, not really. They still left way too many ducks on the pond. Add that to poor defense and pitching and you’ve got a team that can't get out of its own way.

Bullpens are strange animals. They are very unpredictable by nature and it's hard to be overly positive or negative going into the season. That, of course, didn't stop some from declaring the 2025 Red Sox pen as the "best in the AL." Bullpens normally consist of 8 pitchers but, to me, there is a core of 6 plus a long reliever and a mop up guy. Let's focus on the six that have been with the team the entire year.

Craig Breslow's only real move in the offseason was signing Alex Bregman, but it turned out to be a big one. However, for some reason, many Red Sox fans believed the lineup would be much better than last year, mainly due to the Big Three. Again, there were many question marks going into 2025.

I, like many other Red Sox fans, thought Craig Breslow did a nice job in the offseason. He got 2 top of the rotation starters, an impact RH bat, and had 3 prospects poised to make huge impacts on the big league roster. However, I wasn't ready to declare a World Series season just yet. I did feel that there were several question marks going into the season.

We’re nearly 60 games into the season, and if you’re being honest with yourself, you can see it plain as day: this Red Sox team has a loser mentality — and it’s infected every inch of the organization. From the front office to the final man on the bench, the vibe is less “We’re here to win” and more “Let’s not embarrass ourselves too much.”

You can’t slap a World Series logo on the scoreboard and pretend you’re still that team. The 2025 Sox? They’re not built to win. They’re built to not lose — and that’s a difference that’s killing them, one game at a time.

⚾ The Death of the Killer Instinct

Let’s start with what’s right in front of us. You watch these games, and it’s clear: there’s no sense of urgency. No spark. No hunger in those late-inning at-bats. It’s a team that doesn’t seem to have any fire left in the tank.

It’s been almost six years since the Red Sox dumped Dave Dombrowski like yesterday’s coffee grounds, and the franchise still hasn’t found a steady footing. Yeah, they had that flash-in-the-pan 2021 playoff run. But if you’re honest with yourself, you know the last half-decade has been defined more by confusion and cheap excuses than any real identity.

Alright, Bastards. We’ve talked a lot about Alex Cora’s decision to pull Garrett Crochet early, and yeah, I’m still furious. But let’s dig deeper: because this isn’t just about one night. It’s a window into what’s holding this team back — and why fans like us have every right to be pissed off and demand better.
