Theo Epstein once said that every season is sacred, and he's right. The Red Sox need to find a way to make 2025 productive. They could continue to bang out games running the same flawed lineup out there every night in the hopes that they can turn the season around or they could choose to accept a new mission. The mission is to maximize the chances of opening a championship window in 2026. Now, I can just hear the Ballpark Buzzes and Boston Sports Gordos of the world rise up in anger. "This team is not that far away! They can still win the World Series!" OK, you have fun with that. To be clear, I'm not saying you concede the 2025 season. They should still try to win every game. Anything less would send the wrong message to the team. My suggestion is to make changes now that will set you up for success in 2026.

All the media outlets love to report how bad the Red Sox are with runners in scoring position (the infamous RISP). I was curious what this actually looks like, so I broke down the RISP chances in the 10-8 loss to the Rays in timeline form:

For those keeping score, even though they did go 4 for 23 (.174), they walked 4 times and scored 4 runs without recording a hit (GIDP, 2 ground outs, and a fielding error). So, technically they were 8 for 23 (.348) in scoring runs with RISP. Should that make everyone feel better? No, not really. They still left way too many ducks on the pond. Add that to poor defense and pitching and you’ve got a team that can't get out of its own way.

Bullpens are strange animals. They are very unpredictable by nature and it's hard to be overly positive or negative going into the season. That, of course, didn't stop some from declaring the 2025 Red Sox pen as the "best in the AL." Bullpens normally consist of 8 pitchers but, to me, there is a core of 6 plus a long reliever and a mop up guy. Let's focus on the six that have been with the team the entire year.

Craig Breslow's only real move in the offseason was signing Alex Bregman, but it turned out to be a big one. However, for some reason, many Red Sox fans believed the lineup would be much better than last year, mainly due to the Big Three. Again, there were many question marks going into 2025.

I, like many other Red Sox fans, thought Craig Breslow did a nice job in the offseason. He got 2 top of the rotation starters, an impact RH bat, and had 3 prospects poised to make huge impacts on the big league roster. However, I wasn't ready to declare a World Series season just yet.
